30 Books/Series I’m Ashamed I Haven’t Read Yet

If you’ve been following me for awhile, you’ll know that I buy all of my books at bargain prices. I love searching for books at Goodwills/thrift stores/bargain sections at B&N and BAM and finding books on my TBR list. I almost never buy a book at full price.

It’s crazy that I don’t, but I’m a teacher, and we don’t have a great salary. Also, I’m a graduate student, so a lot of my money will be going toward tuition and such. Besides, the books I find for cheap are usually in great condition!

However, the downside is that there are tons of books that are popular right now that I haven’t read because I can’t find them in thrift stores. There are so many, and I hate that they aren’t available to me right now, but it’s fun to constantly search for books that are on my list. It’s like a scavenger hunt.

Here is my list of books I’m ashamed I haven’t read. Please don’t hate me too much.

1. ACOTAR and ACOMAF by Sarah J. Maas

These books have blown up in the book community, and I’m dying to read both! I don’t have either of them, but if I spy them for a cheap price, I’ll buy them before I can even blink.

2. The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

These books have also been receiving tons of hype! I found books one and three in my local Goodwill Bookstore, but I’m still looking for book two.

3. Falling Kingdoms Series by Morgan Rhodes

I’ve been really enjoying fantasy books lately, and I’ve heard this is one of the greatest fantasy series out right now. I own book three, thanks to the cheap prices on Book Outlet, but I’m still searching for the rest.

4. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan

I own every single one of these books, and they’ve been sitting on my TBR shelf begging to be read, but I keep neglecting them. Someone convince me to read them, please! I know they are wonderful – the book community raves about Rick Riordan. I just need to buckle down and read all five of these.

5. The Mara Dyer Trilogy by Michelle Hodkin

I’ve heard mostly good things about this trilogy, but the one thing that I always hear is great is Noah Shaw. I have to read this trilogy, even if it’s to see what the hype of Noah Shaw is all about. I don’t own any of these books yet.

6. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

I know what you’re thinking. How have I not read these books? I know. I honestly don’t know. I own every single one of them, but I just haven’t convinced myself to do so yet. I will eventually, I promise!

7. The Selection Series by Kiera Cass

I’ve never seen The Bachelor, but I’ve heard these books are like the book version of the show. I’ve also heard they’re guilty pleasure reads. I own books one and two, thanks to Goodwill, but I’m still searching for the rest of the books.

8. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

I think I’m the most ashamed that I haven’t read this. Literally everyone and their mother has read this book. I’m still actively searching for it. I know it’ll be more than amazing.

9. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Like I said above, I’m ashamed and searching for this book.

10. The Legend Trilogy by Marie Lu

I’m really in the mood for a good dystopian. I haven’t read many of those. I own books one and two, and found them at Goodwill, but I’m still trying to find book three.

11. The Hush, Hush Series by Becca Fitzpatrick

I’ve heard mediocre things about these books, but I still want to give them a try! I own every single one, and found them all at different Goodwills. I can’t wait to give them a try for myself and form my own opinions on them.

12. Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys

I own this, and have for awhile. I need to read this. According to many book enthusiasts, it’s amazing. I believe them. And the cover is gorgeous.

13. Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys

I recently found this at Goodwill, and like Ruta’s other books, I can’t wait to read this one.

14. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

I NEED TO OWN THIS. I don’t yet, but the cover is amazing and I know Ruta is too.

15. The Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J. Maas

I’m pretty embarrassed that I haven’t read these, either. I own none of them, but as always, I’m searching.

16. Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

Okay, I’m not so ashamed I haven’t read this. I just finished reading TMI and TID. Still, though. I’m craving this book. Literally craving.

17. The Bloodlines Series by Richelle Mead

I own books one, two, three, and five. I still need to find books four and six. But I’m excited to read these since Vampire Academy was incredible.

18. The Caster Chronicles by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Honestly, I’ve heard pretty terrible things about this series, but I own them all and it can’t hurt to try!

19. The Shatter Me Trilogy by Tahereh Mafi

I own book one, and I need books two and three. The covers are gorgeous, and everyone in the Book Community gushes about these books. I want to read them and be included!

20. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children Trilogy by Ransom Riggs

Moving on down to Tahereh’s hubby – I want to read these creepy looking books! I own books one and two, and I’m waiting for book three to turn up in a Goodwill somewhere!

21. The Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy by Laini Taylor

I’ve heard great things about these books! I own the first two, but not the third. I honestly have no clue what these are about, but like always, I’ve heard amazing things.

22. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han

I love Jenny Han! I own book one in this duo, and I need book two. I’ve heard that Jenny is writing a third, and I’m hoping it’ll be as great as I’ve heard the first two are. I need a great contemporary to read.

23. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Don’t hate me. I’ve owned this since I was in 10th grade. I tried to read it. Classics aren’t my thing. I’ll eventually get to it. Maybe. We’ll see.

24. Colleen Hoover Books (except Confess)

I read Confess earlier this year and fell in love! I NEED MORE COLLEEN HOOVER IN MY LIFE! That’s all I really have to say about it.

25. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

I’ve owned this forever. I need to read it. I eventually want to teach it to my students.

26. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

I own this and a few others in the series. I’ve heard great things. I need to read it, but geez, the books are gigantic. I need time to commit to this series.

27. Morgan Matson Books

Yes, I haven’t read the Queen of Contemporary. I own Since You’ve Been Gone, but no others. How have I not read Morgan Matson? We have the same name! Contemporary is my favorite! What’s wrong with me?

28. The Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I have the first bind up and the third, but nowhere has the second! Not even in their regular price books! What is up with that?

29. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

I want to read these books desperately. They’re fairytale retellings! They’re so hard to find at a decent price! I somehow found Scarlet at Goodwill, but the others are hidden somewhere. I eventually will find them, then proceed to devour them.

30. The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

These covers are so gorgeous, and I’ve heard wonderful things about these books. Seriously, the prettiest covers ever. I need them all. I have no words.

Those are 30 books/series I’m ashamed I haven’t read yet. I’m sure there are more, but I don’t want to embarrass myself too badly. What are some books you’re ashamed you haven’t read yet? If you’ve read any on my list, give me some feed back on them and let me know if they’re worth reading.

See you guys next time, and happy reading!

Colleen Hoover is my favorite! Defiantly give her books a try, they are really good! My top 2 are Ugly Love and November 9, but I have a feeling her newest one coming out in August It Ends With Us is going to be amazing 🙂 I can’t wait for it.

We share a lot of unread books in common & I often get cases of FOMO aka Fear Of Missing Out but like you, shop for bargains. One day we’ll get to the bottom of our TBR’s…hopefully not though 😂💕

Ahhh, I agree with you on so many things. I also love finding books on my TBR at thrift stores, etc. I want to comment on every book/series you’ve mentioned that I’ve already read, so here it goes:

Percy Jackson – hmm, I read these books when I was in my early teens, and I think that was a huge factor behind me liking the books so much. I’m not sure how I would feel about them if I read them at a later age, though. But Rick’s writing is really great, so there’s that.

The Selection – ugh, I didn’t bother to finish this series. I can understand how these books can be guilty pleasure reads for others, but I just found every character so annoying, haha. I wouldn’t discourage you to read them, though.

Fangirl – is a really great book! I think its charm mainly comes from how relate-able Cath (the MC) is, especially for us bookworms.

Hush, Hush – the series is written by Becca Fitzpatrick, not Marie Lu, and used to be one of my favorite series of all time. Like the Percy Jackson books, I read this series when I was younger. I re-read it two years ago and was really surprised to find that it wasn’t really that great of a series. Or maybe, it’s just that my taste has changed.

Throne of Glass – I wrote a review for the prequel and the first book, if you want to check them out. Basically, this series was overhyped in my opinion.

Miss Peregrine’s – this was an okay book for me, but I have to say I’m disappointed with how the storyline turned out. I guess you have to read it to see where I’m coming from…

Daughter of Smoke and Bone – Laini Taylor is such a great writer!! I love love love her writing style, but the plot of this series didn’t interest me enough to read the rest of the books. (I’ve only ever read the first one)

Lara Jean duology – another okay book(s). I think they were a little overhyped, though. Not as much as Throne of Glass, but still.

Colleen Hoover books – I’m not really a huge fan of CoHo, but I do appreciate her writing style. November 9 is my favorite among her books, I guess.

Morgan Matson books – I am so proud to say that I’ve read all her books except Amy and Roger’s. (okay, maybe that’s not “all”). About the Queen of Contemporary, though. Is that a legit thing? Because I feel like I have to disagree. I mean, I love MM and all, but I just feel like Sarah Dessen is more apt for that title, lol.

The Lunar Chronicles – aka my second favorite series after Harry Potter! Yes, yes, you definitely should buy them without hesitation.

The Raven Boys – I’m currently reading the first book and I have nothing but praises for it so far.

YAY, that was a super long comment. Haha, I hope you don’t mind me suddenly raving and ranting in here. You needn’t be ashamed of still not reading these books, though. I mean, if Harry Potter is in here somewhere, you should be… haha, kidding. But seriously, I really enjoyed reading (and commenting on) this post – obviously. Haha.

Wow, thanks for all the input! I changed that one mistake, haha. I got carried away with all my typing, so I put Marie Lu twice! All this advice is great! And yes, I read HP late in the game, but I was 17, so almost 6 years ago. I think I just want to read all these books mainly to enhance my own writing abilities, good or bad. But I’m glad you’ve given me input on these! I think Morgan Matson might be like the new Sarah Dessen, since Sarah Dessen isn’t putting out books as frequently anymore, but I’m still a huge Sarah Dessen fan. I’ve almost read all of her books. My most anticipated read ever is the Lunar Chronicles. I just HAVE to read those books!

      1. Ara | The Bookish Agenda says:

Yay, you’re welcome! I read HP a little late, too. I feel the same! When I’m having writer’s block, usually all it takes is reading a book with great writing and suddenly I’m all inspired again. And I agree about Sarah Dessen – glad to know you’re a fan as well!! I’m proud to say I’ve read all her books, and this time I really mean “all”, haha. Ahhh, I’m excited for you to read TLC!!

  4. rantandraveaboutbooks says:

I haven’t read a single Rowell book but they are on my TBR. I wouldn’t recommend the Beautiful Creatures series. I could barely finish the second book. I also haven’t read a single Sarah J. Mass book or any of the Cinder books. You might be able to get some of these at your local library if you reserve them.

      1. rantandraveaboutbooks says:

Oh that sucks. Some towns don’t have as much support for their libraries. Who knows you might like them. I was hooked on the first book but had trouble with the second one. I bought the hardback box set and I now wish I could give them to someone since they were so expensive.

      2. happilyeverbookish says:

Luckily I got them all at Goodwill, so it won’t be too terrible if I hate them. Yeah my town doesn’t have a great library, but luckily we have lots of Goodwills within driving distance, so I’m always on the lookout for what isn’t at my library.

That’s awesome! I’ve heard it’s a great book to teach in high school, and since I’m an English teacher (well, I will be come August. My first year!) I thought I might try to convince my school to eventually let me teach it. I need to read it first though!

I hope your first year goes really well!! My partner is thinking about becoming a teacher so any advice in the next 6 months would be awesome. 🙂
It’s a bit swear-y and a bit graphic, but I absolutely agree, it would be fantastic to study.

  5. Ashleigh says:

Half of these books I absolutely adore, and the other half I haven’t read either haha! The Ruta Sepetys books are definitely on my list. I’ve read Salt to the Sea and loved it, but now I REALLY need to read Between Shades of Grey (I even own it) and Out of the Easy. Ohhh the shame of owning Between Shades of Grey for months now and not having read it 😆

  6. Nina // By Page or By Plane says:

As I was reading this I was thinking, yep, yep, yep I haven’t read that one either, yep, haha. This is like a checklist of books to read but haven’t (I’m looking at you, Ruta Sepetys books, Lunar Chronicles, and Rainbow Rowell!)

  7. journeyofangie says:

Percy Jackson is love love love….💜💜💜

    You won’t regret reading them🙌

Majority of the book/series on this post, I also haven’t read them yet. Fangirl, Carry On, Shadow and Bone, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, A Court Of Thorns And Roses are some of the books I want to read the most..🙋

    You are not alone.😸
